Political parties are an indispensable part of any democratic system. They have a special role under a parliamentary system of government based on universal adult franchise, as adopted in India. The party which secures 2% of seats in the Lok Sabha from three different States or more is accorded recognition as a National party by the Election Commission. Other than that, if a party gets 6% of the total votes polled in four states and also wins 4 Lok Sabha seats or gets recognized as a State party in four or more States, then also it is accorded the status of a National party.
